Right in the heart of Basilicata, on the peaks of the Lucanian Dolomites, there is a breath-taking experience that you should add to your bucket list: the Angel Flight.
A steel cable connects the two highest peaks of the mountain. On one side, there is the small village of Castelmezzano, and on the other side the village of Pietrapertosa.
Suspended on this cable you can enjoy one of the fastest and longest zip line in Europe. Fly between the 2 villages above the deep valley and have a fantastic day in Basilicata’s most iconic spot.
What is The Angel Flight?
The Angel Flight is an adventurous activity that also shows you the fantastic nature and landscape in Basilicata.
The little town of Castelmezzano is located on one of the peaks of the Lucanian Dolomites. From there, at an altitude of 1019 meters, you start zip lining and arrive in Pietrapertosa at an altitude of 888 mt. It is a distance of 1452 meters with the top speed of 120 km / h. Less than 90 seconds and you are there!

On the flight back, you start from Pietrapertosa at 1020 mt and arrive in Castelmezzano at 859 mt, covering 1415 meters with the top speed of 110 km / h.
How to get there?
The easiest option is to reach Castelmezzano or Pietrapertosa by car. It is only 20-25 mins away from the highway and the closest big city is Potenza, capital of Basilicata.
If you are travelling by bus, you need to get to Potenza first. From there, catch the Sita bus to get to Castelmezzano or the Renna bus to Pietrapertosa
I went there with a camper van as I included it in my trip around the South of Italy, after 2 weeks travelling through Calabria. I was with my parents and they did The Angel Flight as well! Omg if they enjoyed it!
How to book The Angel Flight?
Book it directly on The Angel Flight’s website! The ticket includes a round-trip flight on two different lines. You can choose to start either in Castelmezzano or Pietrapertosa.
I suggest you to start in Castelmezzano for several reasons. It is the closer village to the highway. It has a 25 min hike to reach the launching spot and you’d rather do it before than after. Also, it has the best view and it is ideal as first launch!

Allocate a bit of time, before or after your flight, to visit these 2 gems in Basilicata. Castelmezzano and Pietrapertosa are lovely villages on the Lucanian Dolomites. A nice walk around, great food and an amazing view! That’s what you will find there.
Tip: you have a roundtrip ticket and eventually you finish where you started. When you book you can choose the time of the return flight, so you should allocate 2 or 3 hours after the first flight. Explore the other village (Pietrapertosa, if you started in Castelmezzano; or viceversa), grab some local food, check out the castle and then go for your last flight.
